Packaging placed on the market carries a harmonised label with information on material composition, based on pictograms and easily understandable, including for persons with disabilities (Article 12(1)). Reusable packaging additionally carries a re-usability label and a QR code or other standardised, open digital data carrier with information on the re-use system and the collection points (Article 12(2)); under Article 12(3) this does not apply to open loop systems without a system operator. Where a claim on recycled content is made, it must comply with the specifications of the implementing act and be based on the methodology under Article 7(8) (Article 12(4)). All labels must be applied visibly, legibly and indelibly and must be available before purchase in online sales (Article 12(5)). For packaging manufactured or imported before the deadlines, Article 12(12) allows a three-year sell-off period.

In Verkehr gebrachte Verpackungen tragen eine harmonisierte Kennzeichnung mit Angaben zur Materialzusammensetzung, die auf Piktogrammen beruht und auch für Menschen mit Behinderungen leicht verständlich ist (Artikel 12 Absatz 1). Wiederverwendbare Verpackungen tragen zusätzlich eine Kennzeichnung zur Wiederverwendbarkeit und einen QR-Code oder einen anderen standardisierten und offenen digitalen Datenträger mit Informationen zum Wiederverwendungssystem und zu den Sammelstellen (Artikel 12 Absatz 2); für offene Kreislaufsysteme ohne Systembetreiber gilt das nach Artikel 12 Absatz 3 nicht. Wird eine Angabe zum Rezyklatanteil gemacht, muss sie den Spezifikationen des Durchführungsrechtsakts entsprechen und auf der Methode nach Artikel 7 Absatz 8 beruhen (Artikel 12 Absatz 4). Alle Kennzeichnungen sind gut sichtbar, deutlich lesbar und dauerhaft anzubringen und müssen im Online-Verkauf vor dem Kauf verfügbar sein (Artikel 12 Absatz 5). Für Verpackungen, die vor Fristablauf hergestellt oder eingeführt wurden, gilt nach Artikel 12 Absatz 12 eine Abverkaufsfrist von drei Jahren.
